Armie Hammer’s Most Controversial Moments Over the Years

Armie Hammer is no stranger to controversy and backlash, having raised eyebrows for his questionable behavior and comments as far back as the early days of his career.

The actor came under fire in January 2021 after multiple women took to social media to share screenshots of graphic direct messages that he had allegedly sent them. The DMs, which have not been verified, detailed domineering sexual fantasies ranging from rape to mutilation to cannibalism.

Hammer called the screenshots “bulls–t” in a statement to TMZ in addition to slamming the “vicious and spurious online attacks” that caused his name to trend on Twitter for several days straight. In the midst of the scandal, he decided to step away from the movie Shotgun Wedding, in which he had been set to star alongside Jennifer Lopez. He cited spending more time with his children, Harper and Ford, whom he shares with estranged wife Elizabeth Chambers, as the reason for his exit.

The alleged DMs were not the Call Me By Your Name star’s first controversy, though. He previously made headlines for being outspoken on Twitter and Instagram as well as sharing TMI details during interviews.

As a result of his online antics, Hammer was the subject of a number of op-eds since he broke through in the entertainment industry in 2010 with his portrayal of the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network.

In November 2017, BuzzFeed made waves by publishing an article titled “Ten Long Years of Trying to Make Armie Hammer Happen,” in which the website’s senior culture writer Anne Helen Petersen wondered whether he was “truly a unique star who’s finally finding his niche — or simply a beautiful, pedigreed white man who’s been allowed, in a way that few others in Hollywood have, endless attempts to discover it.”

The Gossip Girl alum infamously called the journalist “bitter AF” after reading her viral story. He subsequently announced that he would be taking a break from Twitter, only to fan the flames with Petersen once more upon his return two months later.

In May 2021, the J. Edgar star checked into a Florida rehab facility, according to a report from Vanity Fair. A friend of the Hammer family told the outlet at the time that the actor was “committed to getting healthy and having custody of his kids.”

Nearly seven months later, Us Weekly confirmed that the Mirror Mirror star checked out of the facility. “I can confirm that Mr. Hammer has left the treatment facility and is doing great,” a lawyer for Hammer said in December 2021, without specifying when the actor checked out.

Keep scrolling for a look back at some of Hammer’s most controversial moments:

Rough Sex Comments
Seven-and-a-half years before the Rebecca star’s alleged DMs surfaced, he candidly spoke about his penchant for BDSM during an interview with Playboy. “I used to like to be a dominant lover. I liked the grabbing of the neck and the hair and all that. But then you get married and your sexual appetites change,” he said in June 2013, three years after tying the knot with Chambers. (The couple split in July 2020). “And I mean that for the better — it’s not like I’m suffering in any way. But you can’t really pull your wife’s hair. It gets to a point where you say, ‘I respect you too much to do these things that I kind of want to do.’” Matt Baron/BEI/Shutterstock
BuzzFeed Back-and-Forth
Hammer tweeted in November 2017 that the chronology of the aforementioned BuzzFeed op-ed was “spot on,” though he felt the writer’s “perspective [was] bitter AF.” “Maybe I’m just a guy who loves his job and refuses to do anything but what he loves to do…?” he added. In February 2018, the movie star attempted to reignite the feud, telling Peterson via Twitter that she should “try meditating” or “even medicating” because her “glass seems chronically half empty.” Stephen Lovekin/Shutterstock
Stan Lee Tweet
Countless celebrities and fans shared personal photos with Stan Lee in November 2018 after the legendary Marvel Comics writer’s death. Hammer was perplexed by the social media posts, sarcastically tweeting at the time that there was “no better way to commemorate an absolute legend than putting up a picture of yourself.” While the Golden Globe nominee later apologized for “inadvertently [offending] many who were genuinely grieving the loss of a true icon,” he reversed course in February 2019. “I do not feel badly for the people that I offended who met Stan Lee once and were capitalizing and masking self-promotion as false grief,” he told British GQ at the time. Toe-Sucking Video
Hammer grossed out many of his Instagram followers in July 2019 after sharing a video of his then-2-year-old son, Ford, sucking the actor’s toes. “This happened for a solid 7 minutes. #footfetishonfleek,” he captioned the post. Chambers joked from behind the camera that it was “not normal,” though she later assured fans that her “children’s safety and well-being is always our first priority.” Rob Latour/Shutterstock
Saudi Arabia Trip
The On the Basis of Sex star was among the celebrities and social media influencers who received backlash in December 2019 for accepting all-expenses-paid trips to Saudi Arabia, which has had a history of human rights violations. The stars documented their stays via Instagram one year after journalist Jamal Khashoggi was assassinated at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Hammer raved that the trip was “truly special” but never publicly responded to the criticism. Shutterstock; Inset: Courtesy of Armie Hammer/Instagram
Alleged Instagram DMs
After several women, including writer Jessica Ciencin Henriquez and model Paige Lorenze, shared disturbing allegations about Hammer’s social media and in-person conduct in January 2021, Us confirmed that he had exited the movie Shotgun Wedding. The California native later told TMZ, “I’m not responding to these bulls--t claims, but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for four months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic.” Hammer dropped out of two TV series, Gaslit and The Offer, later that month. He moved out of his Los Angeles home in February 2021 after he and Chambers sold the seven-bedroom property for $4.7 million. Andrew H. Walker/Shutterstock
‘Ms. Cayman’ Post
Hammer apologized to the Miss Cayman Islands Universe Committee in January 2021 after the Daily Mail published a video from his private Instagram account that showed a lingerie-clad woman in bed, whom he referred to as “Ms. Cayman.” In a statement to the Cayman Compass, he said, “I would like to clarify that the person in my video, which was stolen from my private Instagram, is not Miss Cayman. I am genuinely sorry for any confusion my foolish attempt at humor may have caused. My deep sympathies to Miss Cayman, who I don’t know, and to the entire organization as I had no intentions of implying she was actually Miss Cayman.” S Meddle/ITV/Shutterstock
Rape Allegation
Effie Angelova claimed during a March 2021 press conference with renowned women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred that the Straight White Men star had “violently raped [her] for over four hours” in L.A. in April 2017. “He repeatedly slammed my head against a wall, bruising my face,” Angelova alleged, saying she “thought that he was going to kill” her. Hammer’s attorney denied the “outrageous allegations” in a statement, telling Us that the star “has maintained that all of his interactions with Ms. Angelova — and every other sexual partner of his for that matter — have been completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance.” The Los Angeles Police Department later confirmed to Us that it was investigating the alleged incident. True Crime Documentary
ID and Discovery+ announced in May 2022 that Hammer and his family would be the subject of an upcoming true crime documentary called House of Hammer. "Debauchery. Deceit. Abuse. Addiction. Corruption. Over the course of five generations, the men in the Hammer family have more secrets and scandals than any vault can contain," a press release read. "Armie Hammer's alleged crimes are only the tip of the iceberg." In addition to covering the Lone Ranger star's alleged disturbing DMs with various women and Effie Angelova's allegations of rape from early 2021, House of Hammer will also cover all of the scandals that his ancestors, dating back to his great-grandfather, Armand Hammer, have been involved in through the decades. Potential New Gig
After rumors circulated on social media that Hammer was working as a hotel concierge in the Cayman Islands following his sexual misconduct scandal, a lawyer for the actor denied the reports. In July 2022, attorney Andrew Brettler told Variety that Hammer is a guest at Morritt's Resort in Grand Cayman, but he is not employed there. Later that month, Brettler told Entertainment Weekly that he "can't confirm or deny" the rumors "because Armie hasn't addressed it." The attorney added, "I just think it's s---y that, if he is selling timeshares, the media is shaming him for having a 'normal job.' What's the story here?" Richard Shotwell/Invision/AP/Shutterstock
The ‘House of Hammer’ Documentary
Several of the actor's former partners spoke out about their relationships with him in an August 2022 trailer for the Discovery+ docuseries House of Hammer. “In the beginning, I felt like this was all perfect; this was amazing,” Courtney Vucekovich recalled in the video. “But then things changed. He pushes your boundaries a little bit at a time. You’re his, completely. … I mean, he said, ‘I‘m 100 percent a cannibal.’ I [was] freaking out.” She added: “He just acted mad. The ropes were around your neck, your wrists, your ankles and you’re, like, completely immobilized. I’m just closing my eyes until it ended.” Julia Morrison, for her part, read a text allegedly sent to her by Hammer. “I haven’t really digested this one,” she said before reading the message. “‘I have a fantasy about having someone prove their love and devotion and tying them up in a public place at night and making their body free use and seeing if they will f—k strangers for me.’” When similar claims about Hammer made headlines in January 2021, the star denied the claims in a statement via his lawyer, telling Us: “These assertions about Mr. Hammer are patently untrue."  John Palmer/Media Punch/INSTARimages.com
