Holly Madison 'Hated' Watching 'Girls Next Door': I'm a 'F--king Zombie'

Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt are the latest stars to go back to their roots for a rewatch series, revisiting Girls Next Door for their “Girls Next Level” podcast.

“The first three were kind of traumatic. I have to say, like, I just hated watching myself. I looked at myself, and I thought, ‘She’s a f—king zombie,’” Madison began on the Monday, August 22, premiere episode of the podcast. “And I know what made me a zombie, but not everybody else does. … Bridget and I lived there for, like, three and a half years before the cameras even started rolling. And there was a lot that went on. So when I see myself in this first episode, I know what conditioned me to be the way I was. And I feel like you guys need to know that before we jump in.”

Marquardt admitted that she was first exposed to Playboy when she was 4 years old.

“I think my journey started when I was, like, 4,” she said. “My dad had the magazine subscription, so the magazines were laying around. And even though, like, I kind of knew that they were my dad’s magazines — and not really for me to look at — I would sneak peeks at them and stuff. And I just thought that the girls were so beautiful in there. Like, I didn’t see it as nudity or sexual or anything like that. I just thought, ‘They’re so pretty. And I want to be like that someday.’”

When asked how much she knew about Hugh Hefner before testing for Playboy, Marquardt said she “knew nothing” about him or his lifestyle.

“All I knew [were] these pictorials and I wanted to do that. I skipped those ‘Hanging with Hef’ pages. Like, I never even looked at that stuff,” she said. “I just knew nothing. And I even remember making a joke one time somebody saying, “What are you going to do when you see Hef?’ And I said, ‘Oh, I don’t even think I would recognize him.’ And they were like, ‘What? That’s not possible. Of course, you would recognize him.’ And now I look back and think, ‘What? That’s not possible.’”

Marquardt went on to recall her first Playboy audition, admitting that she was “in shock” when she was asked to take her top off before officially booking the gig.

“[The photographer’s like], ‘You guys don’t have to take your top off. It doesn’t matter to me whether you do or not. But I am going to ask you, and you need to know whether you’re going to do that before you go in. I can’t sit there and help you make your mind up once you’re in there. So decide now if you’re gonna do it,’” she explained. “I went in that room and still didn’t know what I was gonna do. … I just took a big deep breath, and I took it off and threw it on the bed and he made me feel so comfortable and so beautiful. … I won’t say it was 100 percent comfortable. Like, I was still, a little bit, feeling exposed. But I felt really good about it.”

Madison had a similar story about posing in a bikini and freezing when she was asked to take her top off for a test shoot.

“I kind of felt like I had to do it or they would never consider me,” the Holly’s World alum said. “So [I said], ‘If I take the pictures, can you make a note that you guys don’t use the pictures unless I’m picked for Playmate?’ And [the photographer] looked at me like I was the biggest weirdo, like, that probably disqualified me right then and there.”

While Madison moved into the mansion in August 2001, Marquardt was living there full-time by mid-2002. E!’s Girls Next Door debuted in 2005 and ran for five seasons with Madison, Marquardt and Kendra Wilkinson. The sixth and final season featured Hefner’s future wife Crystal Hefner (née Harris) and twins Karissa and Kristina Shannon. (Hef died in 2017 at the age of 91.)

Madison and Marquardt were previously interviewed about their experiences with Hefner via A&E’s Secrets of Playboy documentary. Upon its release, hundreds of former Playboy employees, models and Playmates signed a letter calling the accusations “unfounded.”

“We sign our names to support Hugh M. Hefner. From all we know of Hef, he was a person of upstanding character, exceptional kindness and dedication to free thought,” the letter read. “He demonstrated a commitment to living an honest life beyond everything else. Our time within Hugh Hefner’s Playboy and the organization’s subsidiaries remains a period all of us are fond of.”

Seating Arrangements

Nights Out With Hef
Madison said on the August 22 episode that you had to “be on your deathbed” to miss a night out with Hefner when you were living in the mansion. “If I told him I had a headache, he'd be like, ‘Oh, that's too bad. What time are you going to be ready? Get down there by 10!’” Marquardt said. Shutterstock
Hef Was ‘Insecure’
“One thing I would have never guessed about him — just knowing him as an outsider — is he's really insecure,” Madison said. “Like, no one would [have] ever guessed that because he's accomplished so much, and he was such an icon and he was so wealthy and had women throwing themselves at him. But he was really insecure. And he had a really deep insecurity of ever showing up without women on his arm.” Shutterstock
The Recruiter
Without naming names, Madison and Marquardt explained that one of Hefner’s girlfriends when they initially started hanging out with him “felt like she won favor with Hef by bringing more girls into the group.” Madison explained: “I felt like this girl was being so nice to me and so welcoming. But really, I was just, like, another piece of meat for her to throw under him, so she looks better, and she wins points.” She also alleged that the recruiter told the other women to lie about having sex with Hefner when asked by the media. Holly’s 1st Night With Hef
Madison recalled turning down the Quaaludes offered to her at the club during her first official night out with Hefner but admitted that she was “really wasted.” When she got back to the mansion, she put her feet into the bathtub, thinking the other girls were supposed to join. “There’s just, like, one other person because I think at this point, everybody else [who] was living there was just so over the routine, and just wanted to get in and done with as soon as possible and nobody wanted to waste their time with a f—king bath,” Madison said. “So I go over to the bed, the other new girl is already laying there. There’s, like, vibrators laid out for everybody. I'd never used a vibrator in my life. So I'm laying there, like, waiting for everybody else. And I don't even remember everybody else walking in. I just remember laying down and then all of a sudden everybody else is there. And the first thing that happens is the recruiter says, ‘Daddy’ — I'm gagging as I'm saying this — but everybody used to call him daddy in the bedroom, which is so gross. So she'd be like, ‘Daddy, do you want to get the new girl?’ And I s—t you not, next thing I know he's on top of me.” She continued: “Later on [in the relationship], like, things would get so routine. Like, he wouldn't move. He'd be like a bump on the log. … But also, like, I wasn't getting up [the first time], so I guess if he thought I was the first one he was going to have sex with he had to get up because I was so f—king wasted.” Picture Perfect/Shutterstock
Bridget’s 1st Night With Hef
“It was just so much fun — the limo is packed with, like, goodies — cookies, and candy and chips and the champagne and vodka and everything's on ice. And we're pouring champagne for everybody and toasting,” Marquardt began about her first night out with the group. “And then [Hef] did ask if I wanted Quaaludes in the limo. And I was like, ‘No.’ And then later, the recruiter — actually, I don't even know if it was just the recruiter, it could have been a couple of girls — told me, ‘Don't tell him no, just take it. And you don't have to actually take it, but just take it or also quit giving them to us.’” While she enjoyed the evening, Marquardt said she was “super nervous” and “trying to think of an escape plan” to avoid going into the mansion after the club. “And then the recruiter says, ‘Are you coming upstairs with us?’ And I said, ‘Well, I really don't want to.’ … She said, ‘Well, I can tell you that if you don't come up tonight, you probably won't be invited back,’” Marquardt claimed, noting she felt “self-conscious” to get into the bath that Madison previously described. “There's two giant TV screens in there that were playing porn — that's the only light I have. And I'm literally following this little path through the room …” Madison interjected, “That’s carved out through all the junk. … Imagine thinking you're this big player and you're bringing all these girls home and your room looks like s—t.” Marquardt continued to recall the recruiter playing music and ordering food for a “slumber party style” kind of evening — until “things started” with Hefner. “I was hoping that I could just observe and not participate,” she said. “And then the recruiter came up to me and said, ‘You're gonna go, right?’ And because, like, each girl was just kind of having sex for like, I mean, a minute.” Madison agreed, “None of the females were into it, like, sorry to burst the bubble. But none of us were into it. We thought of it as a chore that we had to do, or else we'll get kicked out of the house. And everybody just wanted to make it go by as quickly as possible.” Dave Allocca/Starpix/Shutterstock
