A rocky road. Alex Rodriguez and his ex-wife, Cynthia Scurtis, weren’t always able to put on a united front for their daughters.
The baseball player met Scurtis at a Miami gym in the late ‘90s and they struck up a friendship. After dating for several years, they walked down the aisle in 2002. Two years later, more attention was on their relationship as Rodriguez started playing for The New York Yankees.
“I’m having fun here in the city – I like it,” Scurtis told The New York Post in 2004. “Miami is my home, my family is there, but I love it here.”
During a joint interview on the Today show that same year, the former psychology teacher told Matt Lauer that she was “flattered” by the attention the media gave Rodriguez for his looks. “He’s my husband and if people find him attractive and sexy, great,” she said at the time.
The twosome went on to welcome daughter Natasha that year. Four years later, Scurtis gave birth to their second daughter, Ella, and their relationship crumbled. The Ohio State graduate filed for divorce in July 2008, citing “emotional abandonment” and “marital misconduct” in the court documents.
Reports later surfaced that Scurtis accused Rodriguez of having an inappropriate relationship with Madonna, who had allegedly introduced him to her Kabbalah faith. The “Material Girl” songstress, who was married to Guy Ritchie at the time, denied the rumors in a statement.
“I know Alex Rodriguez through Guy Oseary, who manages both of us. I brought my kids to a Yankee game. I am not romantically involved in any way with Alex Rodriguez,” she said in 2008. “I have nothing to do with the state of his marriage or what spiritual path he may choose to study.”
Rodriguez subsequently entered a series of high-profile relationships, dating Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz, tech CEO Anne Wojcicki and Jennifer Lopez. While he proposed to the “Let’s Get Loud” songstress in 2019 after two years together, the twosome called off their nuptials in April 2021.
Scurtis, for her part, moved on with Miami-based relator Angel Nicolas and welcomed daughter Camilla in 2016. While it’s unclear when they wed, Nicolas started sharing wedding photos in early 2020, commemorating their anniversary that June.
“Happy anniversary my love! I don’t know where I would be without you, but I do know that I am the happiest I have ever been. You and the girls complete me,” he gushed in June 2020 via Instagram. “Love you #iloveyou #happyanniversary #familyiseverything #greece #paros #nicolasfamily.”
Rodriguez and Scurtis, meanwhile, made headlines for a child support battle more than a decade after their split. Scroll through for a timeline of their ups and downs:

“In the beginning, it was kind of crazy. He traveled a lot, and I was working and I was also in school getting my graduate degree,” Scurtis recalled to Lauer in 2004 about the early days of her relationship with Rodriguez, whom she met in the late ‘90s. “And so, it was more, I would say, a friendship that developed into a relationship.” Chris Connor/WENN Newscom/Mega

Less than three months after Scurtis gave birth to Ella, she filed for divorce and their split got messy quick. "The marriage of the parties is irretrievably broken because of the husband's extramarital affairs and other marital misconduct," her divorce petition read, claiming that the MLB star "emotionally abandoned his wife and children." In July 2008, Scurtis’ attorney Earle Lilly claimed to People magazine that Rodriguez’s relationship with Madonna was "an affair of the heart" and not ”sexual infidelity." Amid the reports, which Madonna denied at the time, the athlete’s lawyer said in a statement: "His priorities are to have a future with his children and be a big part of their lives.” Speculation about Scurtis’ relationship with Lenny Kravitz surfaced, but he denied any romantic feelings between the pair. “Cynthia is a friend and is here with the godfather of her baby, who is also Alex’s trainer, his wife and their baby girl,” Kravitz said in the statement at the time. “She came here to escape from everything happening in New York City. I opened my home to her as a friend and I find it extremely hurtful that I am now being referred to as an adulterer.” Despite the drama, the twosome finalized their divorce in 2008: “Cynthia and Alex Rodriguez have amicably resolved their dissolution of marriage proceedings," Rodriguez’s lawyer said in a statement at the time. "They deliberately engaged in a private negotiation. This was and remains a personal family matter for both of them. All of their decisions were based upon and guided by the best interests of their daughters.” Shutterstock (2)

Several years after their split, Rodriguez and Scurtis proved to be on good terms, attending Parent-Teacher Day at Ella’s school in March 2017. The outing came shortly after news of his romance with Lopez broke. Courtesy of Alex Rodriguez/Instagram

Things seemingly took a turn in 2018 amid Rodriguez’s relationship with Lopez after the former spouses reportedly disagreed over child support during mediation. “All I can tell you, there’s been a shift, and I’m not sure what to attribute it to,” Scurtis told The New York Post at the time. “Alex has dated some wonderful women since our divorce, many of whom have had positive relationships with our children. Alex and I have worked well trying to create a stable environment for our daughters and there has never been an issue. Until now.” In a statement to TMZ, Scurtis also fired back at reports that Rodriguez believed she could make a living of her own: ”To ensure that our daughters had a stable upbringing, and given his extensive traveling, Alex requested that I discontinue working and make parenting my primary focus." Through her lawyer, Scurtis added at the time: "I find it terribly disheartening, shocking and disappointing that Alex has resorted to reporting falsehoods. Why he seeks sympathy from the press and public baffles me." Rodriguez never publicly commented on the alleged child support dispute. J Pat Carter/AP/Shutterstock

The blended families put their differences aside for Natasha’s middle school graduation in 2019. Rodriguez shared a snap with Lopez, Scurtis and Nicolas via Instagram for the occasion. “How is my beautiful angel going to be a freshman in High School?! Congrats Tashi, we love you! 👩🏽🎓❤️,” he captioned the snap, which also included his daughter Ella and Lopez’s twins with ex Marc Anthony. Courtesy of Alex Rodriguez/Instagram

Following her split from Rodriguez, Lopez got back together with ex-fiancé Ben Affleck, whom she was previously engaged to from 2002 to 2004. Not long after Bennifer 2.0 took the internet by storm, the baseball commentator snapped a pic with Scurtis. “Cynthia is a world class mommy to our girls … wrapping ice though?!?!?! LOL,” he quipped alongside a post of his ex-wife assisting him with ice on his leg at the gym. The former spouses also posed for a pic with Nicolas. Courtesy of Alex Rodriguez/Instagram
