A ‘Gilmore Girls’ Tribute and More Magical Celeb Proposal Stories

Love is in the air! Celebrity relationship stories are some of fans’ favorite romances to follow and root for, no matter who the stars are or who they are dating.

Whether it’s how a couple met, or their magical weddings, celebs are all about the love.

Over the years, there have been many famous couples, including Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, who have made people believe in love again — especially when it came to their marriage proposals.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are another pair that had fans swooning when the “All of Me” crooner popped the question to the Sports Illustrated model in 2011.

Reality TV stars are not immune to the perfect proposal either. After getting engaged on the season finale of The Bachelorette in 2016, Jordan Rodgers made his followers even more jealous of his relationship with JoJo Fletcher when he dropped on one knee once again in a surprise second proposal in 2019.

The same year, country singer Chris Lane wrote a song to help ask his then-girlfriend, Bachelor alum Lauren Bushnell, for her hand in marriage. He later released the song and its music video, which included the romantic moment when the musician asked the Oregon native to marry him, so fans could witness the perfect proposal for themselves.

See the most magical celebrity proposals of past and present below, including how Pink got engaged and the royal proposal to top them all involving Prince William and Duchess Kate.

Jocelyn Hudon and Jake Manley

The Order star asked his girlfriend of five years to be his bride after driving from Toronto, Canada, to Montreal in August 2020 by replicating a scene from Hudon’s favorite shows, Gilmore Girls. “I was so shocked,” the When Hope Calls alum told Entertainment Tonight of the proposal scene, which included 1,000 red roses on the couple’s Airbnb rooftop. “I thought maybe production had sent them or it was a mistake, or maybe the Airbnb was storing them up there, and then Jake said, ‘1,000 red roses,’ which is from one of my favorite episodes of Gilmore Girls.”

Hudon said that her love then got down on one knee and popped the question. “I was like, ‘Oh my god, is this real!?’ and then he asked me to marry him,” she recalled. “I just kind of fell over and said, ‘Yes.’ I’m still in shock. I love surprises.” The rose-filled balcony was reminiscent of when Max (Scott Cohen) proposes to Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) with a thousand yellow daises, her dream proposal scenario, on the WB show.

Jenna Dewan and Steve Kazee

The Broadway star surprised his pregnant girlfriend at her baby shower in February 2020 and got down on one knee in front of Dewan’s friends and loved ones. With tears in his eyes, Kazee asked the Step Up actress to spend the rest of her life with him. The moment was made possible with the help of Dewan's friend Nikki Reed, who shared on social media that it was “an honor to be a very small part of this special moment” before noting that their love is “pure magic.” Less than a month later, the couple welcomed their first child together, son Callum.

Jordan Rodgers and JoJo Fletcher

So nice, they did it twice! After getting engaged on the season 12 finale of The Bachelorette, Rodgers vowed to re-propose to Fletcher off camera some day before the two would officially wed. That day came in August 2019. The second proposal wasn’t without its complications — Rodgers flew to Nashville to pick up the ring he designed in New York, while pretending he was at work all night, and his flight was delayed four hours. It all worked out and resulted in the “perfectly imperfect” proposal in 2019, three years after the two met.

“This time it was simple: Joelle is the love of my life, she is my rock, she is the funniest, strongest, and sweetest person I have ever known,” the former football player wrote via Instagram after Fletcher said “yes” again. “The first time around I fell in love with a lot of what you all love about JoJo. But this time around I got on one knee and vowed to honor and protect her heart, which is the greatest part of her.”

Lauren Bushnell and Chris Lane

The country singer wrote his future wife a song to propose to her, which he sang in front of the Oregon native and her family on June 16, 2019. Lane proceeded to film the moment and include it in the music video for “Big, Big Plans.” “So some of you know that I’ve been working on a song for Lauren, and I just got it back today. So while we have the cameras here, I wanna capture the moment of me playing it to her for the first time,” he said before breaking into song. “Baby, you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” he tells the Bachelor alum in the video while at her family’s home. “You’ve unlocked things inside of me that I didn’t even know existed. I have to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?”

David Foster and Katharine McPhee

Under the stars! Foster popped the question to the American Idol alum at the top of a mountain in Anacapri, Italy in July 2018. To make the moment even more romantic, it was “totally dark,” according to McPhee, so that all they could see were the stars. “He didn’t push me off the cliff,” she teased via Instagram at the time. “He said it was one of the other. And in the end, he spared me.” The couple celebrated their engagement by vacationing on the Amalfi Coast, eating pasta, soaking up the sun and relaxing on a yacht.

Tissue, please! The Dancing With the Stars cohost and sports reporter got engaged to NHL player Stoll at the Happiest Place on Earth in December 2016. "I was bawling like a child.”

The Money Monster actor planned a romantic dinner at home and played his late aunt Rosemary Clooney's song "Why Shouldn't I" in the background. "I got down on my knee and said, 'I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life without you.' And she kept looking at the ring, and she was looking at me, and she was like, 'Oh, my God,'" he told Ellen DeGeneres in February 2016. "And we now know, because there was a playlist, how long it actually took, and it was, like, 25 minutes."

It's the thought that counts! "I had a big speech in Spanish, and that's what I was nervous about," the Magic Mike hunk revealed during Live! with Kelly and Michael in June 2015, seven months after tying the knot. "The last thing you want to do is like mess up the Spanish on the proposal to a Colombian woman."

Look down! The rapper popped the question while the couple took off for Costa Rica in December 2014. “I had written in the grass her name and ‘Will you marry me?'" he told Ellen DeGeneres in March 2015.“"So once she saw it and we looped around, of course she burst out into tears and was just extremely happy. So it was a pretty original idea."

The Gold actor asked Alves to marry him while opening Christmas presents with their families. "I had wrapped the engagement ring in about eight different boxes deep, so she would keep opening boxes to get with it," he told Jay Leno in 2012. "The first words out of her mouth were not yes. I’m not gonna say what it was. But I did say, ‘Look, I’m down on a knee. I’ll stay here awhile. I will outlast you.’ And I did! She conceded."

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend

LOL! Teigen had horrible cramps and was angry with Legend before the singer popped the question in the Maldives in December 2011. "We got into a very big fight in the car on the way to the airport," she said on FABLife in September 2015. "We opened our [Christmas] presents and he only got me a crockpot and cookbook… And I remember him saying, 'Just you wait!'" Legend later surprised her with a ring while sitting in a sandpit.

Royally perfect! Prince William proposed with his late mother Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring while vacationing in Kenya in October 2010. "He's a true romantic and we had a wonderful holiday in Africa and it was out there in a very quiet lodge and it was very romantic and it was very personal time for both of us," Duchess Kate told reporters a month later, via ABC.

What timing. The actor proposed in 2010 to the writer-actress when she was topless. “She was in our closet, changing, and she was literally only in her underpants. I had already kind of started [to propose]. I didn’t picture it like this, and I know she didn’t picture it like this,” he recalled to Conan O’Brien. He jokingly added: “I figured the only appropriate thing was to place the ring on her nipple, actually.”
