Nick Cordero 'Had a Better Week' Amid His Coronavirus Battle, Wife Amanda Says

Ups and downs. Nick Cordero has suffered setbacks and made progress in his battle with coronavirus since becoming ill.

The Broadway star got sick on March 20, 2020, according to his wife, Amanda Kloots. The fitness instructor revealed on April 1 that doctors believed Cordero contracted COVID-19 after at first being misdiagnosed with pneumonia.

“He is scared, in the ICU and now unconscious so his body can get enough oxygen,” she wrote via Instagram. “We are all trying to stay positive and strong knowing that he is in the best care. I miss him terribly. I’m not allowed there to visit of course and can do nothing to help him. Nick is scared too, this has gone from bad to worse. He isn’t allowed to eat or drink, he is very weak and having a hard time breathing. [Son] Elvis and I are feeling completely fine. My hubby is fighting like a champ but this is serious. Please stay home everybody. Thank you to everyone who has been helping us so far you know who [you] are and you are all angels.”

Kloots asked for prayers after Cordero’s condition deteriorated. “My whole world has stopped,” she admitted on April 10. “Please pray for my husband. Prayer warriors, prayer circles, whatever you’ve got. Energy, meditation, positive thinking. He is fighting for his life right now. Elvis and I need you Nick Cordero. It’s time to fight daddy.”

The former Radio City Rockette remains positive throughout his health battle. “I just got to FaceTime with Nick and I played him this song [“Got a Lot o’ Livin’ to Do!” by Elvis Presley] and sang at the same time. The nurse leaned over while it was playing and said ‘His blood pressure just got better!’” she rejoiced on April 12. “SO please BLAST this song today in your homes at 3pm PST/6pm EST for @nickcordero1 because my husband has a whole lot of livin to do!!!!”

Kloots continues to document Cordero’s journey as he attempts to recover. Scroll to find out everything we know about his ever-changing condition, from his diagnosis to operations and more.

Diagnosis

The Waitress star became ill on March 20. Kloots revealed on April 1 that he was misdiagnosed with pneumonia before learning that he had COVID-19. She also confirmed at the time that he was unconscious and hospitalized in the ICU as he battled the virus.

Leg Amputation

Cordero underwent surgery on April 18 to amputate his right leg due to blood flow issues. “It seems like Nicks [sic] body is responding well to his surgery and recovering well,” Kloots shared via her Instagram Story on April 19. “I asked for a miracle yesterday because my spirits were low and I think we got one today. He is alive and recovering well.”

Negative Coronavirus Tests

“Dada had two negative COVID tests … which means we think the virus is out of his system and now we’re just dealing with recovery and getting his body back from all the repercussions of the virus,” Kloots announced on April 24. One day earlier, the dancer noted that Cordero had been sedated for 13 days and “should have woken up by now.”

Temporary Pacemaker

Cordero had surgery to get a temporary pacemaker on April 24. “It looks like he had some irregular heart-beating last night that scared them enough to want to do a temporary pacemaker in Nick’s heart,” Kloots explained. “His heart is functioning well, but he has had these dips in his heart rate for a little while now, and this one last time apparently was enough that requires them to do this procedure.”

Fever

“Unfortunately, they are not able to remove the ventilator today and put the trach [tube] in because overnight — or earlier this morning — he got a fever that caused his blood pressure to drop slightly,” Kloots shared on April 27. “They are trying to just really make sure that this fever doesn’t really go anywhere or get out of control. They’re doing a couple tests to try [to] find out the source of this fever.” The celebrity trainer added that he was put back on “a little bit of blood pressure medication” and doctors “set aside the ventilator removal until they get this under control.”

Family Support

Speaking to CBS This Morning's Gayle King, Kloots opened up about the journey her husband has been on since testing positive for COVID-19. "We drove to the emergency room and we dropped him off, and this is one of the saddest parts, we thought I would see him in two hours," the dancer explained on April 30. "We just weren’t thinking ... I didn’t even give him a kiss or a hug because we were also kind of self-isolating from him because we have this 10-month-old baby and I couldn’t get sick, I’m still breastfeeding."

She later added her appreciation for all the love and support that her family has received in their difficult time. "When he hears that everyone is playing his song every day ... and praying for him, and now it's on the radio, Gayle. He won't believe it," Kloots said. "I go to the hospital every day. I stand outside of Cedars. I play Nick's song. ... I cheer him on from outside of Cedar Sinai every day."

Lung Problems

“Yesterday was a very hard day,” the former Radio City Rockette told her Instagram followers on April 30. “It started off with a low blood count.” Kloots explained that her husband’s CT scans came back clear, which was a “huge blessing,” but they also learned that due to his COVID-19 complications, his “lungs are severely damaged and look almost like he’s been a smoker for 50 years,” according to doctors.

“There are holes in his lungs where obviously you don’t want holes to be,” she added. In order to get a better idea of what’s going on, the former dancer said that Cordero’s doctors were planning to “do a scan with ink to light up his lungs.” Despite the lung setback, Kloots revealed that she’s “not giving up hope.” She admitted that it’s “super scary news to hear” when they were hoping to get him off the ventilator, but that has now been pushed until the Broadway star’s lungs have been fixed.

Helping Hand

Zach Braff revealed that Kloots and her 10-month-old son, Elvis, are staying in his guest house while Cordero recovers in the hospital. "Well, I am OK, but I'm very close to this because one of my best friends in the world, Nick Cordero, and his wife and baby have been living in my guest house for seven months as they were house-shopping in L.A. to make the move out here," Braff told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published on April 30. "He's 41 and he's unconscious at Cedars — he's on a ventilator. He's lost his leg due to complications and every day we don't know what will happen. So, his wife and baby are living in my guest house, and thank God they've been joined by her amazing brother and sister who are taking care of her and helping her with the baby."

Off the Ventilator

Kloots announced on her Instagram Stories on May 1 that Cordero was “free of the ventilator,” which had been replaced by a tracheostomy tube. “I hope that this is just a great sign for some good recovery days ahead and for him to be able to wake up and just have that pressure relieved from his throat,” she said.

Eye Movement

The star’s wife celebrated his “small little steps” on May 4, saying on her Instagram Stories, “He’s doing good. He’s in recovery today and things are going well. Numbers on machines are coming down, which is great. And we just still need him to wake up. … His eyes are opening up, but unfortunately they’re not connected to anything.”

Ups and Downs

"Fingers crossed for a good day and the possibility always of waking up," Kloots told fans on May 5 after admitting her husband had a bit of a "rocky night" in the wake of his tracheostomy surgery. "His oxygen levels went down, but [the doctors] got him right back. They did a lung scraping to get rid of some more infection, and he's now back to some good numbers so things tend to be going in the right direction. ... So far, I think he's back to being stable with some good-looking things."

Showing Wake-Up Signs

As of May 6, Cordero is showing early stages of tracking, “which means he’s starting to wake up,” Kloots said via her Instagram Story. She explained that although the Broadway star had already opened his eyes, “nothing’s been behind it,” so this is “huge.”

“Now he’s slowly starting to show signs,” she continued. “Again, these are early, early signs, and super small movements that not only one nurse saw, but a couple.” The fitness guru is hoping her love will be awake by Mother’s Day, but no matter what she is “feeling a little bit of relief” after the doctor’s check-in.

On the Mend

Kloots revealed that medical professionals were beginning to see improvements in Cordero. “We just got another update on Nick from the hospital and the doctor has confirmed that Nick is starting to follow commands,” she shared via her Instagram Stories on May 11, noting that this could be “a huge, big, huge deal” in regards to him waking from his coma.

“He is very, very, weak still, so it is very slow progress, when they ask him to do things. But they can see he is trying, which is awesome,” she continued. “Obviously it is registering, and he's trying to do the things that they ask him to do. This is such a blessing, I can't even tell you. It’s just so exciting.”

Finally Awake

Kloots announced that while Cordero is still very “weak,” he has awakened from his coma. “He is a true superhero. I mean, we have just come such a far, far away,” she said in an Instagram Live on May 12. “He’s in there and everything is looking good. It’s like you don’t want to get yourself too excited because it’s been such a road. But that’s why I say it’s a very long road still. We are still in a very long road, but we are in the beginnings of recovery.”

Don’t Stop Believing

Zach Braff raised awareness for his close friend and former costar's health battle during the Chrysalis Night In virtual event on May 14. "It has been a horrible, horrible time and I can tell you that this lovely human is one of the nicest people you’ve ever met who is loved all across [the Broadway] community," the Scrubs alum said during his emotional tribute. "A few days ago, he opened his eyes and has shown some promising signs of returning to us, but it’s going to be a very long road for him. So I just wanted to share with you how this has affected me personally but also so many people that love this man and this woman and their beautiful child Elvis. And I ask that you pray, you pray, if you just root and root. ... You could only hope that you would have a group of friends like the company of Rock of Ages and how they’ve been to Nick."

Little Victories

Though her husband is now conscious and responsive, Kloots revealed on May 15 that he's "still having a little bit of an issue with the infection in his lungs." Continuing her update with an upbeat tone, the dancer added: "He’s getting better and better every day. A little stronger every day, so things are really looking great on that front. ... We are on good, good progress with mental status."

Small Win

Kloots revealed how her husband has continued to improve since waking up from his coma. “I just got off the phone with the doctor and there was a little bit of good news,” she said on her Instagram Stories on May 18. “They pulled out less secretions today from Nick’s lungs than the last time they cleaned him out. So that is great news just because any time they go in there and there's less than before is good.”

She added: “So I’m gonna take that and I'm going to run with that for tonight and I’m going to celebrate that small win.”

A Setback

On May 20, Kloots tearfully revealed that her husband’s health has taken a turn after having a “small win.”

“Nick has had a bad morning. Unfortunately, things are going downhill at the moment, so I am asking again for all the prayers, mega-prayers, right now,” she shared in an Instagram Stories video.

“Please cheer and please pray for Nick today, and I know that this virus is not going to get him down,” Kloots continued. “It’s not how his story ends, so just keep us in your thoughts and prayers today, thank you.”

He’s a Fighter

One day after asking for prayers as her husband suffered a "bad morning," Kloots shared a more positive update with the Broadway star's fans. "So, one of the things I have learned about this whole process is the land of the ICU is one step forward, two steps back," she said in an Instagram Story on May 21. "But I'm happy to say it looks like we're on a step forward again. ... This one goes out to the doctors and nurses at Cedars Sinai, the power of prayer, and the power of energy, and support, and positivity is, I'm sorry, in my opinion, insurmountable."

The dancer gave everyone who's been following her family's journey a huge "thank you" for all of their healing thoughts. "For the last 24 hours we have prayed hard. ... That has been my strength, my strength through all of this, but my strength especially through these last 24 hours," she said. "We have been dancing and singing and lifting him up, lifting him up in only positive thoughts and words and deeds ... It's making a difference. He's not done."

Improving Again

Kloots told her Instagram followers on May 26 that her husband’s doctors had “some success” after putting him in a prone position (lying flat on his stomach to help him breathe) for “16- to 20-hour intervals.” She explained, “All these little things seem to be slowly helping, and we’re just keeping our fingers crossed that these things will continue to see some improvements.”

Keeping Faith

"I am still praying for a miracle," Kloots told her followers on May 30 as her husband's condition continues to change unpredictably. "Sometimes that prayer is answered in the way we ask and sometimes it's answered in a way we could never understand. Faith is a beautiful thing but also, a hard thing. True faith comes in times where we must trust in God, his plan and his will. In that, I find peace always." Earlier that day, the dancer shared a sweet throwback photo of herself and the Broadway star holding hands on a romantic getaway. "It's day 60 and I miss him more than ever," she wrote.

Asking for a Miracle

On May 31, the Ohio native explained that Cordero's recovery has "been in a little bit of a standstill" and that she would be waiting to share a big update on his health. "We're kind of just waiting to see if Nick gets better. So there's really, as far as updates go, not too much updates," she said in an Instagram Story. "We're at a point where we've sort of done everything that we possibly can and now we're just waiting to see if things progress in a way that is good."

After going into detail about her husband's treatment regimen, she reflected on helpful advice she's received from family members in their hard time. "My sister gave me great advice the other day about how sometimes you ask for a miracle," she said. "In your mind, you're asking for the miracle you're asking for, but God gives you a miracle in a different way. ... I will continue praying and asking God for this miracle for Nick and we will see. If it's not the miracle I'm asking for, maybe it's a miracle that comes out in a different way at a different time."

Not Giving Up

"I’ve been told a couple times that he won’t make it. I’ve been told to say goodbye. I’ve been told it would take a miracle," Kloots wrote via Instagram on June 3. "Well, I have faith. Faith that is small as a mustard seed sometimes, but that is all you need sometimes. He’s still here and despite his odds gets slightly, slightly better every day."

She added, “Where there is faith, there is hope. Where there is hope, there can be a miracle! Like my dad has said since day one, every day he’s still with us is a miracle. I believe God is with us, with the doctors and with Nick.”

Seeking Help

Kloots asked for her Instagram followers to share medical advice with her amid her husband’s health battle. “What Nick needs help with most is right now is someone who is or has researched the release of carbon dioxide from the lungs,” she said in her Instagram Stories on June 4. “If you think you know of a doctor or trial to help only that please reach out to me.”

In another video, she noted her appreciation for those who reached out. “I got so many responses back and so many DMs. Some really good things came through,” she explained.

New Treatment

Kloots revealed on June 5 that her husband underwent stem cell treatment with the hope that it would heal his lung. "We have started stem cell treatment for Nick, and that just finished," she said via her Instagram Story. "We decided on this a couple of days ago, and the hospital got it movin’. … I’m just hoping that it can help him. Even if it helps one percent, right? Even if it just bridges us to the next level in healing for him. I'm super excited about it. And I can't wait to see if anything comes of it to help repair, strengthen Nick's lungs and get him any better. So fingers crossed."

Spiking a Fever

Kloots revealed in her Instagram Stories update on June 9 that Cordero “had a little bit of a rocky night last night” as he “spiked a fever” amid his recovery. “They had to do a little bit of fixing of that and antibiotics,” she said at the time. “Luckily, everything is back to normal today and that was just a little blip that can happen in ICU. I mean, anything can happen in ICU, but just a little blip but we're back to normal.”

Major Milestone

Kloots was feeling emotional leading up to Elvis' 1st birthday on June 10. "Tomorrow is Elvis' first birthday. He was born at 6:41 a.m. We have some fun things planned for the little guy," she said during an Instagram Story one day earlier. "I'll definitely be FaceTiming with Nick at some point. It breaks my heart that Nick can't be there. I literally can't even talk about it because it makes me so sad." The former Rockette later admitted that she was expecting it to be a really difficult day while her family celebrated her little one without Cordero nearby. "I'm trying to prepare myself for the emotional day of Elvis turning 1, but then [also] not having Nick there, knowing how much he'd want to be there," she said. "I think it's going to be really hard."

Birthday Boy

On their son's birthday, Kloots made sure to let Elvis know how much his father loved him, even though he couldn't be there to celebrate the big day in person. "My two Cordero men: last June Elvis is in the NICU. This June Nick is in the ICU. These guys are really trying to take me down 😂," she captioned a sweet collage of photos on June 10. "Nick would always look at him and say, 'we are so blessed!' Happy Birthday to my little baby boy ❤️," the doting mom wrote in a separate post.

Weak Lungs

Kloots took to Instagram on June 11 to give fans an update on her husband’s condition after a CT scan of his lungs. “[The doctor] told me today that despite a not pretty CT scan on Nick's chest and lungs area, that the lungs are amazing and they can function, and we just keep thinking about the options that we have and getting him stronger. He said that he has seen lungs recover and they do incredible things, so don't give up hope because you never know what the functionality of something is based off of a picture.”

However, based on the conditions of Cordero’s lungs, a transplant isn’t an option right now. “Unfortunately, at this time, we don't think Nick could handle or survive a lung transplant," she told her followers. "So, that isn't on the table for Nick at the moment."

Missing Milestones

Cordero remained in the ICU when his son took his first steps on June 16. "We have a WALKER!!!!!" Kloots captioned footage of the toddler on the move.

Urgent Reminder

Kloots encouraged people to take precautions against the coronavirus as her husband entered day 75 in the ICU on June 16.

"This is my reminder to you to stay safe, wear your mask, wash your hands, social distance and don’t leave your home unless you have to," she wrote via Instagram. "You don’t want this virus. You don’t want your loved one to get this virus. It’s still here and unfortunately increasing again. I never thought Nick or I would get COVID and we both thought if we did we would be able to stay at home and recover. Nick is 41 years old, in shape and had no preexisting health conditions. He is going on day 75 in the ICU. My heart breaks for him everyday. Please be safe."

Blood Pressure Problems

“The next goal is to get Nick’s blood pressure under control,” Kloots said in an Instagram Story on June 17. “So that might mean that he has an infection, so they are trying to find the infection. After that, if we can get the blood pressure back it would be to go on to intermittent dialysis.”

The dancer asked her followers to “please pray that Nick’s blood pressure gets better” after explaining that her husband’s condition has been a “roller coaster” of good and bad days. On June 16, she revealed that “we’re basically just trying to see if we can get him stable and strong enough to have more options. That’s where we’re at right now. It’s monotonous and it is hard on a daily basis.”

Weight Loss

Kloots told her Instagram followers later on June 17 that Cordero has lost 65 pounds while in the ICU, saying, “He’s so weak that he still can’t move, and his muscles are definitely atrophying.”

Special Visitor

Loots was able to visit her husband for the first time since his hospitalization. She had previously said that her interactions with him were limited to FaceTime because of the hospital guidelines. “I will fight / I will fight for you / I always do until my heart / Is black and blue,” she wrote on June 19, referring to Andy Grammer’s song “Don’t Give Up On Me.” In the Instagram photo, the couple held hands at his bedside. "#Day79,” she wrote. Cordero has also received a second round of exosomes treatment into his system. “We did get a CT scan on his lungs back. It isn’t the prettiest, unfortunately,” Kloots said. “(Cordero’s doctor) told me today that despite a not pretty CT scan on Nick’s chest and lungs area, that the lungs are amazing and they can function, and we just keep thinking about the options that we have and getting him stronger.”

Father’s Day

After visiting her husband on Father’s Day on June 21, the fitness instructor revealed that Cordero “was having such a great day [and] he was more alert than I’ve seen him in a little while.” She said he was “following [with] his eyes a lot” before telling her fans that she now plays “Our House” by Crosby, Stills & Nash right before she leaves him at the hospital and says a big prayer.

‘Day 85’

The fitness guru shared a heartbreaking update on her "profoundly weak" husband, nearly three months after his battle with the coronavirus began. "This will take time, a long time," she wrote in a lengthy Instagram post. "He interacts with his eyes, answering questions by looking up for yes and down for no. When he is alert he can also move his jaw." Despite helping Cordero with "passive physical therapy," the Bullets Over Broadway star still "cannot move his body yet." Though Kloots has attempted to keep a positive mindset through her family's challenging time, she can't help but feel like her husband's condition is "defeating."

"I wish I would walk into his room and he was able to give me a big smile and hold my hand. But instead of feeling defeated, I turn to feeling determined," she wrote. "People may look at me like I’m crazy. They may think that I don’t fully understand his condition because I’m smiling and singing in his room every day. I’m just not going to mope around and feel sad for myself or him. That is not what Nick would want me to do. That is not my personality. I fight and I will continue to fight for Nick every single day. With God on our side anything can happen!"

A Better Week

Kloots updated fans after a visit to her husband on June 26, saying on her Instagram Story that Cordero "had a better week this week than last, which is great." She added that after starting the morning with some blood pressure issues, his medication was decreased and "it seems like he's doing really great again, so that is good." The Ohio native admitted that almost three months into his battle, she hates leaving her husband at the hospital and going home: "It breaks my heart."

"Sometimes leaving is just so hard, but I put on The Karate Kid, a movie that we love," she told her followers. "A movie about inspiration and strength and growth and so I thought he would enjoy watching that." Kloots added that she hopes "for a better day and continued strength and stability for tomorrow."

On June 28, Kloots shared a video of their son walking, adding, "His dad would get such a kick out of him right now."
