No more billionaire baby? Kylie Jenner’s family has consistently showered the reality star with praise since she was named one of Forbes’ youngest billionaires for the first time in 2019.
The Kylie Cosmetics mogul was featured prominently on the cover of Forbes in August 2018 when it was clear that she was quickly approaching billionaire status. The next March, she officially achieved the impressive title, allegedly becoming the youngest self-made billionaire in history at the age of 21. Mark Zuckerberg previously held the groundbreaking position, crossing a ten-figure fortune at 23 years old.
Though fans were quick to criticize how “self-made” Jenner could really be when she comes from a long line of reality TV royalty, her family has stood strongly by her side throughout any backlash. Jenner defended her own status while speaking to Interview Germany shortly after being awarded the prestigious title.
“There’s really no other word to use other than ‘self-made’ because that is the truth,” she said at the time. “That is the category that I fall under. … I did not get money from my parents past the age of 15. I used 100 percent of my own money to start the company, not a dime in my bank account is inherited … and I am very proud of that.”
The Life of Kylie alum earned Forbes’ historic honor for the second year in a row, leading a list of only 10 billionaires under the age of 30 in April 2020. However, controversy struck the businesswoman one month later when the publication revoked her billionaire title in a fiery exposé titled “Inside Kylie Jenner’s Web of Lies — and Why She’s No Longer a Billionaire.”
“Kylie’s business is significantly smaller, and less profitable, than the family has spent years leading the cosmetics industry and media outlets, including Forbes, to believe,” the article stated, claiming that Jenner had lied about her worth and forged company tax returns.
Hours after Forbes published their critique of the makeup brand owner, she fired back about the publication’s allegations. “What am i even waking up to. i thought this was a reputable site..,” Jenner tweeted. “All i see are a number of inaccurate statements and unproven assumptions lol. i’ve never asked for any title or tried to lie my way there EVER. period.”

While the momager noted that she was proud of all of her kids for their various business ventures, she couldn’t stop gushing over Kylie, who "rolled up her sleeves" to make a name for herself. "She made her own money for over a decade, she put it in the bank, she saved every nickel," Kris told Entertainment Tonight in July 2018. "And then, when she decided on what she wanted to do, she spent her money on a venture that could have gone south or north, and it did really well."

After her sister was featured on Forbes’ cover for the first time, the model praised her exemplary work ethic. "If you’re just sitting at home being lazy I don’t think that could happen," she told Entertainment Tonight in July 2018, adding that success "doesn’t just happen if you’re not doing something about it."

Before Kylie officially earned her Forbes’ honor, the KKW Beauty founder opened up about how she felt having a competing company with her sister. “We learn a lot from each other and we’re really supportive,” she said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in July 2018. “I’m really happy for her. I mean, the second the Forbes cover came out … we were all so excited, screaming. And I was like, ‘Christmas is gonna be lit this year.’”

Despite criticism from fans, the Selfish author couldn’t think of a better word to describe her sibling. “I really didn’t get it, because she is 'self-made' — we are all 'self-made,’” she told Refinery29 in July 2018. “What, because we came from a family that has had success? To me, that doesn’t really make sense ... I know so many people like that [who] haven’t turned out to be as successful as Kylie. If anything, I've seen the complete opposite.”

The Strong Looks Better Naked author gave her little sister a playful bit of praise during a YouTube Q&A in June 2019. When the two reality stars questioned whether or not they would be willing to eat a cockroach for $1 million, Kylie quickly said no. “Well, that’s because you’re a billionaire,” Khloé replied.

Though she was thrilled for her sister’s success, the Poosh founder spoke candidly about the pressure the rest of the family faces because of Kylie’s brand. “Probably subconsciously it makes us feel like, 'When's it enough?” she admitted on The Real in September 2019. “We didn’t even think about [becoming successful]. We kind of just hit the ground running.”

"When we’re in a group chat talking about where we should go for a trip, they’re like, 'Kylie? You going to pay for it?'" Kylie said during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in September 2019, admitting her family teases her about her wealth. "Just stuff like that. … They’re all really proud of me, for sure."

"I'm so proud of her," Kim told Entertainment Tonight in November 2019 after Kylie sold more than half of her company for $600 million to Coty, Inc. "To think in her early 20s, she built a business off of something that she first was insecure about and finding confidence and, you know, just tapping into that and figuring out how to make an amazing product and just being true to herself and doing what she loves to do, that's so inspiring and so amazing and I'm so proud of her."

"This is her baby and this is her dream ... She hasn’t even scratched the surface," Kris said of her youngest daughter after Kylie Cosmetics sold 51 percent of the brand in November 2019. "She feels like this is where she belongs. This is where her passion is and she really wants to use her creative side to develop her brand. This is what she wants to do for the rest of her life. She talks about it all the time."
